Response #5 -Periods 1 and 2

Over the past few weeks we have been discussing the challenging and banning of books. I have been thrilled with this unit because you have all responded so well to the lessons. I especially enjoyed it when Ms. Strickland came in "ranting and raving" about the books in my classroom. The looks on your faces were priceless!! I hope that you have all learned something in this unit. We will be wrapping it up this week.

Remember, any work is potentially open to attack by someone, somewhere, sometime, for some reason! This is how a book challenge and possible ban occurs. Protect your right to read!

I would like you to answer the following questions in your blog this week (please label your answers 1, 2, and 3):

  1. Do you agree or disagree with book censorship? Why or why not. Full, well thought out answer is expected.
  2. Do you think censoring music is the same or different as censoring books? Explain your answer. Full, well thought out answer is expected.
  3. Have you read any of the books we have talked about? Which ones? You may just list them. Remember, we discussed the books on "the list" for elementary ages also. I have the Duval County Challenged Book List at my desk if you need to be reminded.

hey ms.reed!

1.I do not agree with book censorship because i think that if its written then its supposed to be there. They take it too far, if it talks about running away they censor it and thats not right. But i think it makes the book better.

2.No, censoring music are different than censoring books because people listen to how they say it and books you read it.... i dont know. I think its different because music uses alot of bad words and talks about bad stuff.

3.I've read green eggs and ham and speak but i think im going to read one of those censored books soon. They are alot more interesting, i think because it talks about true life and what alot of teenagers are going through.

I disagree with book censorship, Because it shouldn't be banned just because a couple of people think that it's horriable. If they don't like it then they shouldn't read it, it's that simple. I don't go around the school saying well this locker is ugly I want all of them gone. It's not my place to say that, yeah ok I don't like them all I have to do is not use it.

2.Do you think censoring music is the same or different as censoring books? Explain your answer. Full, well thought out answer is expected.
It is exactely the same, old people don't like to listen to rap of coaruse so they don't listen to it. If parents have such a problem with the music today then, they should go with their kids to get the cd they want just so they know what they are lisening to. NOT MAKING EVERY ONE ELSE SUFFER!

No, I haven't unfortunately i'm reading ginger bread. which is good by the way. But I might read one after the book that i'm reading now.

hi ms.reed

1.I do not agree with book censorship, if you have a problem with a book dont read it. I dont think any body has the right to tell you your not allowed to read something. Also if parents complain about a book their child is reading or something i dont know what they are trying to hide from them, whatever is in the book they will figure out eventually.

2.No, i think book censoring and music censoring are two totally different things beacuse when they censor music they sometimes just take out some of the curse words, but when books are banned and censored they are taken out of the schools or any other public places.

3.I just finished "go ask alice" tonight and it was the best book i have ever read, and i would recommned the book to anybody.Go read a banned book chances are you wont be able to put it down.

2nd period is where it's at!

1.I dont agree with book censorship because i think its anyones decision and if you dont like the book and think it should be banned or censered, it doesnt mean that someone else does, its your opinion!, and the people that start all of this stuff about a book, they make it look a whole lot better.
2.No, its a whole lot different because you listen rather than read. They shouldnt censor it because its your choice to listen to the music, besides, even if you do censor the music we're going to find an uncensored version(real version)of it anyway.
3.I've read "Freak The Mighty" and the sequel to that book, and my whole entire class is reading "Lord of The Flies", YOU read "The Lorax" and I read "Green Eggs And Ham".

hey ms.reed.

1.)I do not belive that they should be able to ban books, because books are sometimes fictional and based on something that can happen to anybody, and there just lettin you know how it is,and what can happen,or not even that even if it is fiction,if your own child is reading somethiong take it away from THEM not the whole entire world.

2.)no i dont think its the same thing because when you censor songs, there is still a version you can get on the computer or people buying it for the underage kids listening to it...and when you ban books its taken out of shelves at librarys and off the shelves at MOST stores. to tell you the honest to god truth i havent even heard half of the books you have in your class room.

3.)no i havent,i havent even heard half of them.
im reading one though.

luh you!!!!!

HEY MRS. REED,

1.I DISAGRE WITH BOOK CENSORSHIP BECAUSE I THINK THAT IF AND INDIVIDUAL OR EVEN A GROUP OF PEOPLE THINK THAT A BOOK SHOULD BE BANNED BECAUSE THEY FEEL IT'S UNAPPROPRIATE THEN THAT'S THIER OPINION BUT OTHER INDIVIDUALS MAY FEEL THAT THE BOOK IS INTERESTING AND THAT THERE'S NOTHING UNAPPROPRIATE IN THE BOOK AND THAT WOULDN'T BE FAIR TO THEM BECAUSE THEY MAY WANT TO READ THE BOOK.

2.I THINK THAT CENSORING BOOKS AND MUSIC IS BASICALLY THE SAME BECAUSE THEY GET BANNED FOR THE SAME REASONS LIKE UNAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE OR SCENES OR PEOPLE MAY FEEL THAT THE TEXT OR LYRICS IS OFFENDING TO THEM. BOOKS MAY HAVE JUST AS MUCH VIOLENCE AND UNAPROPRIATE LANGUAGE JUST LIKE SOME MUSIC LYRICS.

3.I AM CURRENTLY READING A BANNED BOOK CALLED LOVELY BONES. IT WAS BANNED BECAUSE THE GIRL IS TALKING ABOUT HER RAPE AND MURDER WHILE SHE'S NO LONGER ALIVE IN HEAVEN

1. i do not agree eith book censecship becaus3 it would ruin the book and block out certainb parts and would not be fair for the reader or the author.

2.i think censoring music is differnt because the writer is sinigng it in a tone tht could sound offenseive so they censor it and in a book ur jst reading it in ur mind

3. i read a child called it a couple years ago it is a good book but i can undestand why it was question due to its cont3nt

1 i do not agree with book censorship i say if your mature enough acording to your parents you should be able to read whatever you want

2 no crnsorship about music and books are different. music talk about a lot of bad topics but is is different from litreature as long as you look at it like liture just like printing the words to a song

3 i have read sapeak and understand why it is censored but i really dont plan on reading a ban book i am trying to get a copie of the book mullet run .mullet season just started two days ago

1. i dont agree with book censorship. Its reall stupid. All people around the world especially in America, should be able to read and write what they want.People like critics take these books too far like "oh they cant say that". Blah!!!! They are just jealous that they cant be such a good writer.

2.censoring music is a little different than censoring books. People listen to music and what is said while reading you just focus on the meaning of what you read.

3. I've read pretty much have read all the doctor suess books. hehee like that one day breaking down the Lorax and my notes booklet thiing. that was funny. Im now reading "Go Ask Alice" its really amusing to see what she writes. I've read other books too that are banned and plan to read more. I like finding why they are banned. More of a challenge.

luv ya!!!! Danyelle Ward

Hello Ms.Reed,

1.I do not agree with book banning because the author has a right to wright whatever kind of book he or she wants to.Plus they take it way too far about whats written in the book because its the readers choice if he or she wants live like that.

2.No, censoring music is way more different because if you take the lyrics to a song misguide then you will end up doing bad things.Whe reading it doesn't get caught in your head if you use it in a bad way.

3.I've read call of the wild before but i just read whatever im interested in so i don't if i'll like a banned book or not.

Hey Ms. Reed

1. I don't agree with book censorship. I think it is wrong to take away from other peoples lives. Writing books is a job for people and that is how they surrive. If you ban the book then it means less money for that author. I think they are trying to hide people from what they like.

2 I feel that they are both the same. To me music would be like if some one sang something from a book either way you can read it or someone sing it to you. It is also how someone surrvives and is there job.

3 Green Eggs and Ham, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Harry Potter Books, James and the Giant Peach, Of Mice and Men, The Lorax, The Bridge to Terabithia.

Hey Ms.Reed
1.I do not agree with book censorship because i think people can write and express how they feel. They say that we have a freedom of speech and well they are taking that away from us.By them censoring our books thats means we cant express how they feel.

2)Yes,Censoring books and censoring music are the same thing. You reed books and well listen to the music but that don't mean nothing. In some books you find bad words and well i music you will always find bad words. The may be different but censoring them is the same.To tell you the truth i am not really sure.

3)I read the book Green Eggs and Ham and thats a really good book.I really don't understand why they baned that book but it is a book for kids.Reading the baned books are more interesting then reading all them other books. As i see the books that have been baned are good to read and they other books are boring!!!!

1. I do not agree with censoring a book.

2. It goes for music as well. First of all, the author has the right to express their thoughts on matters. Secondly, if you are going to censor books then that goes for music as well. If someone does not think that the words or lyrics are appropriate they should read something else or listen to another station. It's as simple as that. This way it lets people have the right to choose whether they want to read this book or not.

3. One of the books that I have read is Gossip Girls. This book does have many inappropriate things for school. It's like the bible, you are allowed to read the bible and discuss how people in the past used the bible; but you can not teach or preach people the words of the bible. This goes for any book. Gossip Girls explains every situation that a young teenager experiences. Whether it's their friends, you, or people around you, you will experience some of these situations. This book teaches you to make a choice when you are in that situation and how to handle yourself when you are in it. I have personally noticed a change in the way I think about certain things after reading this book. I honestly don't understand how some people think that their children can be isolated from everything bad in the world. Everyone is exposed to it sooner or later but it's whether you can handle the situation well enough that makes you smarter and more mature than others.

2.I think that its differnet because with music you can hear the words that are blank the words out. But with a book you can really tell all that much unless you really pay look at it. I guess.

3. I've read "To kill a Mocking Bird", " A Child Called IT", " "The Lorax".
